Why do my geraniums smell like metal and will cutting off all the flowers help reduce the smell?
Most all geraniums have a somewhat unpleasant smell, that comes from the oil in the plant which is emitted from the leaves not flowers, so removing the blooms will not eliminate their odor. One variety, the citronella which doesn’t bloom, is especially disliked by mosquitos; it’s oil is used in candles and torch oils to burn outdoors to keep the unwanted pests away from your yard. SCOTT
Geraniums do have a funny smell. i wouldn’t suggest cutting anything off except the leaves at the botttom that may have turned completely or mostly yellow or brown. If you don’t like their smell, place the plant away from you where you can see its beauty but don’t have to be really near to it. My experience is that they just generally always smell like that from a very small plant.
